John has written for Albany-area alt-music magazine of yore BUZZ, Goldmine Magazine, and various punk and metal ‘zines. He enjoys loud music, zombie movies, watching his bird feeder, homebrewing, the Red Sox, lawyering and hiding from the plague with his wife, voice talent Donna Frank, until he can go see loud music played live again. Until then, an occasional pint of Guinness will do.

Flashback to January 25, 1990: Voi Vod join Soundgarden at The Chance in Poughkeepsie

John Moore Jan 25, 2021
A killer double-bill of Soundgarden and Voi Vod took place 31 years ago today on January 25, 1990 at The Chance in Poughkeepsie. Actually, it was a triple-bill, a band called The Big F opened, but there was some pretty intense fog. We got…

Hearing Aide: Lost Breed ‘Speak No Evil’

John Moore Jan 21, 2021
2020 was a year (mostly) devoid of live music, and you’d expect that it should have been full of new music, right? Not as much as you’d think, I’ve found, but this heavy release from Lost Breed, which snuck out near the end of that…

Flashback to Jan. 11, 1988 – Dio, Megadeth and Savatage at Glens Falls Civic Center

John Moore Jan 10, 2021
While a lineup of Dio, Megadeth and Savatage may sound like a great 80s metal triple-bill now, 33 years later, this show, in terms of ticket sales, was a flop. The late, great Ronnie James Dio is rightfully heralded as a virtual deity…

Flashback to December 8, 1987: Anthrax, Celtic Frost and Exodus at Mid-Hudson Civic Center

John Moore Dec 8, 2020
Nineteen eighty-seven was undoubtedly “the year of the Anthrax.” The Queens thrash metal band released their third album, Among The Living, which elevated them from underground thrash metal heroes to wider acclaim.  The first show…

Flashback: November 28, 1986 – Metallica and Metal Church at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center

John Moore Nov 28, 2020
Metallica and Metal Church played the night after Thanksgiving in 1986, and the Mid-Hudson Civic Center was sold out.  In years following the Mid-Hudson was usually open floor but this show was seated, which killed the vibe a bit, but did…

Flashback: November 26, 1989 – Clifton Park Arena hosts Billy Squier, Blue Murder and…

John Moore Nov 26, 2020
Billy Squier had pretty much jumped the shark by ’89 – he was constantly on rock radio in the early 80s, but his melodic hard rock throne had been usurped by hair metal bands by this time. His unintentionally hilarious, career-destroying…

Flashback to November 2, 1988: Slayer, Motörhead and Overkill at Mid-Hudson Civic Center in…

John Moore Nov 2, 2020
These were days when metal giants still walked the Earth, and on this day on 1988 a bulletproof triple-bill played at a packed Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie: California thrashers Slayer, legendary British underground gods…

Halloween Flashback: Raven, Liege Lord and Never More perform at L’Amour in Brooklyn in 1986

John Moore Oct 31, 2020
New Wave of British Heavy Metal band Raven were no strangers to playing Halloween shows in the New York City area - their first American gig ever had been just over 4 years to the day, October 30, 1982, when they opened for Riot and Anvil…

Flashback: Grim Reaper, Armored Saint and Helloween perform at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center, October…

John Moore Oct 1, 2020
The Mid-Hudson Civic Center is not a particularly huge arena by normal standards, but the fact that it was less than half-full on this night made it seem that much bigger. This was a solid triple-bill of 1987 real metal - dubbed the…

Flashback: Watch AC/DC and Yngwie Malmsteen’s Rising Force rock Glens Falls Civic Center on…

John Moore Sep 5, 2020
A mighty gig this was. 35 years ago tonight, on Sept. 5, 1985, AC/DC and Yngwie Malmsteen’s Rising Force performed at Glens Falls Civic Center. Remember Ticketron? This was actually AC/DC’s first headline gig in New York’s Capital…
