Brooklyn rock band Myra Lee is on track to make a nostalgic debut on the indie rock scene. The band has released their second single titled “Dean” ahead of their LP releasing next month.
Myra Lee consists of vocalist Tahlia Amanson who also plays guitar, bassist Aiden Velazquez, and drummer McCabe Teems. The band is reminiscent of 90s rock, taking inspiration from iconic bands such as Sonic Youth and Pavement.
Previously, Myra Lee were known as Dino Expedition. The name change is a collective decision, taking inspiration from prior artists who have used a fictional name to represent the band. For instance, think of singer Cat Power, whose second album also shared the same name, Myra Lee.
“Dean” is a personal tale from Amanson, sung by her haunting vocals against a dreamlike, yet tense sound. The lyrics are suffocating and full of terror, possibly attempting to emulate the story behind the song.
“My youngest sister, Ondine, had multiple near death experiences before she was 2 years old.” Amanson explained, thinking back to a summer spent by the docks. “[My mother] handed Ondine to my other sister, who didn’t catch her and Ondine fell into the water, sinking beneath the surface unable to swim.”
The lyrics capture the emotion and terrifying ordeal in detail, especially the panic of her underwater to the relief of getting her safely. The guitar has a voice of its own in the song, representing the horror as it clashes with the soft vocals of Amanson.
Apart from “Dean,” the full LP consists of other raw themes in its songs, focusing on alcoholism, sexuality, and grief. Similarly, their first single, “Magpie,” is also raw and personal in its lyrics.
Myra Lee’s debut album is titled Capture The Flag. Recorded in two days in a basement on the Lower East Side, the full LP contains six tracks for a release date of June 26th.
