On Tuesday, November 3, NYC-based indie band Book/Spirit released their newest single, “Badger.” The single is the first song off their upcoming album, CATASTROPHIZER. The full LP will be available on December 1.

Since their formation in 2018, Brooklyn-based rock band Book/Spirit has always drawn from a variety of influences. From the melancholy sounds of second-wave emo, the distorted romanticism of ’90s dreampop, to the jagged slant of post-punk, the group uniquely combines genres for a stellar introduction to their sophomore album.
In the nearly 8 years since its creation, Book/Spirit places collaboration as the forefront to their success. Lead singers and guitarists Pete Ferrari and Mike Susa share primary lyric-writing duties with their fellow band members, Micah Evans (bass) and Garrett Troy (drums). Multiple voices, inspirations, and musical styles blend together in their music.

“Badger” is indicative of this. The group combines the styles of last three decades to create a sound that is both nostalgic and refreshing. Opening with heavy bass riffs immediately grab the listener’s attention, but it is soon settled by the calming, easy guitar and vocal harmonies. Book/Spirit does an excellent job keeping true to their foundations: dark, literary anthems with heavy, impactful lyrics, that listeners can still rock out to no matter what.
Their next single, “Fusion,” will drop on November 17. A contrast from Badger’s fast-paced, groovy feeling, “Fusion” slows it down immensely. Slow guitars, accompanied by seamless basslines and gritty vocals bring the band’s grunge and post-punk inspirations to life. Deeply personal lyrics display the band’s inspirations from early 2000s emo.
While these singles are wildly different, they are an excellent way to gauge the heaviness and creativity behind Book/Spirit’s upcoming album, CATASTROPHIZER. The album will release on December 1 by one of New York City’s most revered indie labels, Mint 400 Records.
The end of 2026 and the beginning of 2027 will be big years for Book/Spirit. Following the release of CATASTROPHIZER, they will be heading on a lengthy European and UK tour. Dates are yet to be announced, but still highly anticipated.
