New York Historical Opens Exhibition on 1970s Punk, Disco, and Hip Hop

The New York Historical, the first of New York’s museums, has opened a new exhibition titled You Should Be Dancing: New York, 1976 and Beyond. Featuring a wide variety of documents, photographs, and other historical artifacts, this exhibition explores the period of musical and cultural transformation that took place in the 1970s.

The exhibition spotlights three music genres with roots in New York City in the 1970s. Though economic conditions during this period were difficult, creative expression flourished. You Should Be Dancing explores both of these hallmarks of the decade, with historical documents illustrating the city’s financial hardship on display alongside memorabilia from movies, TV shows, and pop culture of the time.

Punk, disco, and hip hop were three key forms of musical expression that arose during the 1970s. Artists like the Ramones and Blondie revived punk music at CBGB in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn were home to new disco clubs, and innovative DJs spearheaded the growth of hip hop street culture.

Among the artifacts on display are a Fender signed by Dee Dee Ramone, the original cover art for the first issue of Punk Magazine, a pair of platform disco shoes, a beat machine and turntable once owned by Grandmaster Flash, and a large collection of photographs and album covers. Visitors to the museum will also have the opportunity to watch video clips, listen to music recordings, and even mix their own tracks with a DJ turntable.

You Should Be Dancing: New York, 1976 and Beyond will be on view until Apr. 4, 2027. For more information, visit the New York Historical website.
