Tupac’s Dream Lives as Rakim, Kurupt & Masta Killa Unite Coasts for “Goin Down” off Upcoming Joint Album

Tupac’s hope for unity between legends of the East and West is finally coming to fruition. West coast rap legend Kurupt teams with Rakim and Masta Killa of Wu Tang to release the second single –“Goin Down”– from their upcoming joint album, Godbody.

On “Goin Down,” the core essence of each coast is alive and well. Beginning with a minimalist vocal loop of the track’s title, along with a grizzled snare drum that is reminiscent of the classic, grimy New York sound. The beat is then topped of with relaxed synths and an off the rails, yet entertaining bridge to complete the record’s west coast ambience. The gaudy three-man lineup sees Rakim opens with his razor-sharp delivery, before Kurupt and Masta Killa bat cleanup with strong verses each.

The trio announced The Godbody with the release of  “A Different Kind,” Rakim first solo, self-produced track in fifteen years. Offering fans an intimate look at the artistry of a man widely regarded as one of the genre’s most influential voices.

Recorded across both coasts: Kurupt bringing the California cool, while Masta Killa and Rakim bring the ruggedness of New York. The project showcases the diversity and versatility of the legendary trio while embodying a vision first imagined by the late Tupac.

Set for release on September 18, The Godbody is more than an album, it’s a full-circle moment. In the mid-1990’s Tupac had a vision where he foresaw hip-hop’s most respected lyricists coming together to deliver a body of work built upon mutual respect, legacy, uncompromising artistry and coastal unity. An era Tupac looked to reign in himself with his Death Row East record Label before his untimely death.

To maintain the album’s authenticity, Rakim and in-house producer Nick Wiz oversaw production in its entirety, and features collaborations with legendary figures from both coasts, many of whom were at the forefront of the infamous East Coast-West Coast war in hip hop. The Iikes of Snoop Dogg, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, KRS-One, Daz Dillinger, Kool G Rap, Buckshot, Kokane, and Killa Sin lent their hand to the project, among others.
