Maybe the kids are alright. Up and coming Buffalo rock band Blissen are set to release their new single, “Mad Tree” on June 6. The band is exploding onto the scene with sludgy guitars and agonizing vocals on their first single ever.
Emerging out of the underground music scene, the band consists of lead vocalist Josh Ruszkowksi, Matt Kuberski on guitar, bassist Timothy Gierlinger, and drummer Michael Schnorr. With a sound similar to the likes of Alice in Chains and Soundgarden, nobody would guess the group are simply high schoolers.

The song doesn’t begin like your typical grunge song. A few taps at the beginning tease a different vibe, but it quickly descends into a familiar distorted riff and bassline. Ruszkowksi’s vocals come in, fitting the haunting melody softly before going into a gritty chorus.
It’s short and to the point, bursting with energy and signifying the slow descent into madness that is found in the lyrics. It feels like the song is also “swaying alone on this mad tree,” vocals following along with the distorted riffs.
Punishing drums accompany the slow, yet electric guitar solo. It’s flawless in its execution, seemingly showing years of experience that is mostly self-taught.
The band associates the song’s meaning with mental health, lyrics detailing the story of someone who is struggling inside. It’s a vulnerable and impactful showcase of their songwriting ability, making for a memorable debut track.

Although “Mad Tree” will be their first single, the band has built a small following from playing local shows. In late 2025, they went on a small tour in the North East region, performing in Syracuse and Buffalo. On March 6th, they opened for legendary grunge band Sponge in Buffalo, an impressive feat for the young rockstars.
Blissen is growing their small but dedicated fanbase by the day. With 5,000 followers on Instagram, they’ve grown their young audience in a unique way. Making memes, jokes, and silly TikToks about their music, members of the band, and recordings from their shows.
It’s a refreshing sight for young rock fans who want to listen to a familiar sound like older bands that came before them. For older rock fans, it’s fulfilling a desire to hear that old 90s grunge sound make a comeback.
Blissen is also teasing the release of their LP for this summer. “Mad Tree” releases on June 6. To pre-save, click here.
