A Film About Jimi Hendrix

Originally released in 1973, A Film About Jimi Hendrix was the first major posthumous documentary dedicated to Hendrix following his death in 1970 at age 27. Produced by Joe Boyd alongside John Head and Gary Weis, the film blends electrifying concert footage with raw interviews from the industry’s most influential figures.

Boyd has left a lasting mark across decades of music. He founded Hannibal Records and helped shape folk-rock through his work with Pink Floyd, Nick Drake, Billy Bragg and R.E.M. He also operated the soundboard at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival when Bob Dylan debuted his electric sound. More recently, he worked on Amazing Grace, the acclaimed 2019 documentary centered on Aretha Franklin’s historic gospel recordings.

Legendary producer Joe Boyd will join via Zoom for a rare Q&A.

Meanwhile, Juma Sultan is recognized for his close creative relationship with Hendrix. He wrote and recorded with Hendrix until the guitarist’s death. Sultan has also collaborated with artists including Sonny Simmons, James “Blood” Ulmer, Pharoah Sanders, and Sam Rivers.

Juma Sultan will join the event in person.

Tickets and additional event information are available through the official Crandell Theatre website.
