Brooklyn’s Whisper Doll released dreamy new single “Sunsigns” and companion music video on September 8. This single, along with three others earlier this year, are released ahead of Whisper Doll’s first full-band record Lucky Clover, arriving October 2 via Take Care Records.
Whisper Doll’s bandleader and singer Fiona Tagami credits a deep inspiration from 90s dream pop, which is evident in the sound of “Sunsigns.” Lustrous guitar opens the single, before driving drums and bass line join in at the first chorus to propel the song forward. The reverb of the guitars and Fiona’s light clear vocals float above the world as the lyrics look to the sky for answers.
At the core of “Sunsigns” is yearning; both for the one you love and signs that this is the person for you. However, this isn’t the typical love song. On the surface, the lyrics muse of a hopeful desire of potential love, but a deeper hopelessness seeps through. Rather than looking for signs organically, the lyrics point towards personal intervention. Fiona’s dreamy voice sings: “Calculating sun signs / Neurotic and devine / Pulling the cards until I see you / I see you.”
The music video also indicates this tension through its imagery. Throughout the video, Fiona (dressed like the titular character from cult-classic film The Love Witch) pulls tarot cards. Rather than revealing cards that indicate hope or romance, Fiona notably pulls cards depicting a hermit, an angel, a blindfolded woman, and three swords stabbing through a heart. In spite of desire, all signs point towards patience and self reflection to avoid heartbreak.
“Sunsigns,” along with previous singles “So Sweet,” “Bluebells,” and “Am I a Knife,” offer an exciting first glimpse into what is to come for Whisper Doll’s Lucky Clover.
Whisper Doll is kicking off their album release tour at Brooklyn’s Baby’s All Right on October 9. They’ll be joined by local favorites Buff Ginger and Cyanotype, along with DJs Starclear Reunion, Computerwife, and Shower Curtain.
