In support of his new album, The Mirror, Buck Meek brought his solo tour to Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday, July 15. Along with opener Kisser, the musician, most known for his work in Big Thief, united the Manhattan crowd through the power of folk.
Indie-rock opener Kisser is the brainchild of Buck Meek and his wife, Dutch vocalist Germaine Dunes. With Meek and Adam Brisbin on guitar, Luke Temple on bass, and Jesse Quebbeman-Turley on drums, the band is a free-spirited, alt-90’s collaborative project between multiple independent artists. They shine as a group, reminiscent of a softer, folk version of Hole or Seether. Their spirited grunge sound showed a different side to Buck Meek, appreciated by all who arrived early to the intimate venue.
Buck Meek returned to the stage for his main set around 9 PM. Donning an ‘I Heart NY’ shirt, the singer and his backing band smiled widely, greeting his New York City fans for the second time that night. Beginning with album-starter “Gasoline,” Meek’s classic folk sound was put on immediate display. The gentle tonality of Meek’s voice helped emphasize the beautiful, romantic lyricism of “Gasoline.” Couples embraced, friends sang to each other, and Bowery Ballroom was lit in all forms of love.
As the guitarist and backing vocalist for Big Thief, Meek is extremely familiar with crafting emotionally raw, powerful tracks. This proves to be true for his solo project as well. Simply through vocals, lyrics, and instrumentation, Meek is an effortless storyteller. With little to no live visual production, the power of music shines through.
“Outta Body” brought an upbeat, swayable sound to the packed ballroom. Another vulnerable tune, the room embraced the nostalgic nature of the song by singing along, waving their arms in the air. The show had everyone cheerful from beginning to end. Touching the hearts of his fans through gentle lyrics and soft strings, Buck Meek’s Bowery Ballroom show left a deep mark on the New York crowd.
