David Lee Roth brought his “Don’t Love Me, Rent Me” Tour to Proctors Theatre in Schenectady on Tuesday, May 26. He delivered an evening filled with classic Van Halen hits along with storytelling and swagger that has defined his career for decades.
Though the historic theater was only partially filled, the fans present were granted an intimate performance as Roth commanded the stage and connected with his audience.

As the original lead vocalist of Van Halen, David Lee Roth helped shape some of rock’s most recognizable songs and performances. His “Don’t Love Me, Rent Me” Tour has brought that legacy to stages across the country, providing fans an opportunity to continue experiencing his power and influence. While Proctors may have been more intimate than the packed stadiums he previously dominated, this did not discourage him from dialing back his energy that defined “Diamond Dave”.
From the moment he took the stage with his signature grin and confidence, all members of the audience were on their feet and singing along to all the lyrics. His voice remained loud and commanding throughout the night, blending well with a talented backing band that powered through a setlist packed with Van Halen classics, including “Panama” and “Romeo Delight”.

Roth frequently paused between songs to joke with the crowd, drawing one of the night’s biggest reactions when he confessed he was feeling slight under-the-weather and needing Tylenol before the show, but opted for something a little stronger instead. The audience responded with laughter and cheers, embracing the playful banter that made the evening feel even more personal.

While the years have added a touch of nostalgia to the experience, Roth’s stage presence remained undeniable, along with his charisma and humor. The audience responded enthusiastically throughout the night, singing along to beloved anthems and embracing the chance to witness a rock icon in a historic venue.
After the finale, “Jump”, the audience gave Roth and his band a well-earned standing ovation, and as those fans exited the venue, many were still talking about their favorite songs from the night and how these songs shaped their lives. For longtime fans, the evening was a reminder of “Diamond Dave”, while newer concertgoers got a firsthand look at one of classic rock’s most enduring personalities. From the first spotlight to the final bow, David Lee Roth proved that some rock-and-roll legends never lose their shine.
