Kerry Kearney Celebrates 30 Years at Long Island Music Hall of Fame

After three decades on the Long Island music scene, Kerry Kearney will celebrate a major milestone with a two-night 30th Anniversary Gala at the Long Island Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame on May 1 and May 2. The second night has already sold out, adding to the anticipation for what promises to be a special run of shows.

The intimate show—limited to just 100 tickets—will bring together musicians who have played with Kearney over the years, along with friends and longtime supporters. With complimentary refreshments and a close-knit setting, the night is shaping up to be more of a celebration than a typical concert.

From Police Academy to the Road

Kearney’s career in music almost never happened.

“I was actually going to be a policeman. I was already heading toward the academy. Then everything flipped.”

At the time, he was on a completely different path, with a steady future ahead of him. But one unexpected opportunity would send him in the opposite direction—and into the life he was meant to live.

The Marty Balin Break

That turning point came through a connection with Marty Balin of Jefferson Airplane, who took notice of Kearney’s playing and opened the door to something much bigger.

“I got on that bus, and I didn’t come back for five years.”

What followed was a whirlwind stretch of touring, recording, and living the life of a working musician at a high level. Kearney traveled across the country—and even internationally, including shows in Russia while it was still under Soviet rule—while sharing stages with legendary players.

Along the way, he performed with artists like Jerry Garcia, experiences that helped shape both his playing and his perspective.

Crossing Paths with the Allmans

That early momentum eventually led to opportunities alongside members of The Allman Brothers Band, a group whose influence runs deep in Kearney’s style.

“I try not to do what they do because everybody’s just doing what they do.”

Kearney toured with Dickey Betts and shared stages connected to the Allman Brothers orbit, gaining firsthand experience with one of the most respected bands in rock and blues.

Rather than imitate those influences, he used them as a foundation to develop his own voice.

Choosing His Own Path

Despite early exposure to the national stage, Kerry Kearney didn’t chase a traditional touring career.

“I’ve been asked to tour more, even overseas, but I don’t really like flying. So I keep it more regional—and I’m good with that.”

That decision helped shape a career centered around Long Island, where he built a strong and loyal following over the years. Kearney also credited Jim Faith as a longtime supporter, helping keep him connected to major local events like the Great South Bay Music Festival.

Finding His Sound

Over time, Kearney developed a style he calls “psychedelta,” blending blues roots with improvisational energy.

“A lot of people fall into just copying others, but you’ve got to find your own voice.”

That approach has allowed him to stand apart while still honoring the traditions that influenced him. That approach has allowed him to stand apart while still honoring the traditions that influenced him.
Over the years, Kearney has released multiple albums that have helped build his reputation within the blues and jam community.

Defining Success

For Kearney, success has never been about fame or money.

“It’s about respect. When people come up to you and tell you the music meant something to them—that’s what matters.”

It’s a philosophy that has carried him through a 30-year career built on authenticity and connection.

A Night of Celebration

The upcoming anniversary show will reflect that journey, bringing together the musicians, friendships, and memories that have defined Kearney’s career.

With past collaborators expected to join in and stories sure to be shared throughout the night, the event offers fans a rare chance to experience his music in an intimate setting while celebrating the road that brought him there.
