Jean-Sébastien Vallée Named Tanglewood Festival Chorus Director

The Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) has just appointed Canadian-American conductor Jean-Sébastien Vallée BSO Director of Choruses and Conductor of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus.

Founded in 1970, the all-volunteer Tanglewood Festival Chorus (TFC) has become an integral part of the BSO’s programming both at Tanglewood and throughout the year. The chorus enters a new chapter with Jean-Sébastien Vallée as its next conductor.

Canadian-American conductor Jean-Sébastien Vallée is a leading figure in both the orchestral and choral worlds. He delivers compelling performances, broad musicianship, and dynamic artistic leadership. His international career includes collaborations with leading orchestras across North America, along with an active recording career and a deep commitment to educating and mentoring the next generation of conductors.

A Tanglewood veteran, Valée served as one of several guest conductors during the 2025-26 season. In the summer season, he led the TFC in a Prelude concert as well as multiple BSO performances featuring works by composers Palmeri, Bernstein, Brahms, and Beethoven. He also led the TFC performances with the BSO at Symphony Hall last spring, featuring the same Beethoven and Bernstein works.

“My experiences making music with the BSO and TFC have already shown me what is possible when exceptional musicians come together with curiosity, generosity, and a shared sense of purpose.”

Vallée’s work with the TFC will take him across a broad range of repertoire during the BSO’s 2026-27 season. In November, he will prepare two major presentations of the creation story: Haydn’s The Creation and the world premiere of Osvaldo Goljov’s Creation. In 2027, Vallée will prepare Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades, and will take the podium himself to conduct Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 next April.

The TFC’s 2027 Tanglewood season will be announced in late January, with additional collaborations with the Boston Pops planned for future seasons.
