The Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes, the only year-round professional symphonic orchestra in the region, has announced its 2026-27 season. Based out of Corning, the schedule includes four full orchestra concerts in the Orchestra Series and five Musicians’ Choice Chamber Music performances.
The OSFL begins The Orchestra Series with a Halloween Eve concert on October 30. Violinist Kinga Augustyn joins the OSFL for Giuseppe Tartini’s Devil’s Trill Sonata and Maurice Ravel’s Tzigane.
The orchestra will also perform Richard Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman, Carl Maria von Weber’s Der Freischutz, Gioachino Rossini’s William Tell Overture, and even a modern magical composition, music from Harry Potter by John Williams, among other pieces.
The Orchestra Series continues on December 12, when the OSFL will join forces with the Chorus of Southern Finger Lakes for a family friendly Holiday Concert. The event will feature classic holiday tunes like Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, Christmas music by John Rutter and Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride. Audiences can also enjoy new music with the world premiere of a new Hanukkah work composed by Avner Finberg.
On March 7, 2027, the OSFL will share the stage with the Youth Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes, conducted by Margaret Matthews and Melissa Moore. Side-by-side, the two orchestras will perform a variety of pieces, many from popular movies, video games and anime.
The orchestras will perform Camille Saint-Saens’ Symphony No. 3, or the “Organ Symphony,” featured in the 1995 film Babe, The Legend of Zelda, Studio Ghibli classics Princess Mononoke, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Howl’s Moving Castle and My Neighbor Totoro, and more.
This concert will also feature the winner of the 2026 Doreen B. Hertzog Concerto & Aria Competition Timothy Suen, performing the first movement of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3.
The Chorus of Southern Finger Lakes and pianist Eva Virsik join for the Orchestra Series finale: a Beethoven Tribute on May 2, 2027. Honoring the 200th anniversary of the legendary composer’s death, the program features Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, the dramatic Leonore Overture No. 3 and the famous Symphony No. 5.
The five Musicians’ Choice Chamber Music Series are performances by musicians in more intimate settings. The series will take place in smaller venues, starting on October 9 with Trio Espressivo!, and continuing with performances by Laurentide Brass, Chrystallum, The Pietra Group and New Beginnings Quartet.
“Every concert this season offers audiences a different way to experience the orchestra,” said OSFL Music Director and Conductor Toshiyuki Shimada. “There are moments of mystery and imagination, opportunities to celebrate and sing together, young musicians sharing the stage with our professional orchestra, and some of the most powerful pieces ever written. We hope audiences will join us throughout the season and experience what makes live music so special.”
