Union College and The Egg Announce Compagnie Hervé KOUBI Residency

The amazing Compagnie Hervé KOUBI will be heading to Union College in Schenectady for a two-day residency on October 16 and 17.

The residency, sponsored by both the college and Albany-based venue The Egg, will include a master class, lecture/demonstration, and a public performance. In addition to the partnership between the venue and college, this residency is made possible by a generous gift from Gus (Union ‘59) and Sue Davis in memory of their daughter Stephanie.

Hervé Koubi is a renowned choreographer and dancer who takes inspiration from his Algerian roots and Mediterranean culture. His unique style combines contemporary and urban dance movements, capoeira and martial arts with powerful imagery. Koubi’s work focuses on the generational impact of the art form while highlighting the sense of unity dance can bring to different groups. He blends the technical with the aesthetic to create an original experience for dancers and viewers alike.

This residency marks an exciting first for the company as they make their Capital Region debut.  Outreach activities will take place in the Henle Dance Pavilion on the Union College campus in Schenectady on Friday, October 16, 2026 with a master class from 5pm to 6:15pm and a lecture/demonstration from 6:30pm to 7:30pm.  Both events are free and open to the public. No registration is required for either.

Additionally, this engagement marks Union College’s 18th annual Stephanie C. Davis Dance Residency. Beginning in 2008, the residency program has brought in national and international companies such as Ballet Jazz de Montreal and Spellbound Contemporary Ballet. Union College Director of Dance Laurie Zabele Cawley looks forward to welcoming the company in October, stating, “Hervé Koubi’s extraordinary physicality, artistry, and sense of community will challenge, inspire, and move our audiences, making this residency a particularly exciting opportunity for Union.”

The performance at The Egg in Albany at 7pm on Saturday, October 17, 2026 will be the company’s newest creation, “Sol Invictus.” The critically acclaimed performance references the “invincible sun” deity and features a compelling composition by Mikael Karlsson. The dance effortlessly shares themes of love and unity in the face of division. “I want to talk about light, solidarity, and those bonds that unite us,” says Koubi. “Here, the sun and the dance will emerge victorious.” Koubi will speak about his company and his work in a free pre-show talk with Zabele Cawley in the theatre lobby at 6:15pm.

Tickets for the October 17 performance at The Egg are on sale now. Admission is $35 & $45 for the general public with a $25 rate for students and senior citizens. Tickets may be purchased online, in person at The Egg box office at the Empire State Plaza, or by calling 518-473-1845.
