The Great South Bay Music Festival returned to Shorefront Park in Patchogue on Thursday, July 23, kicking off four days of live music along Long Island’s Great South Bay. The opening day leaned heavily into punk, emo and alternative rock, with The Used headlining a lineup that also featured Bayside, Cartel, Koyo, Deadlands, Imposters, No Fly List and Gamblers.

Music began on the Bandshell/Five Towns College Stage with Gamblers, followed by No Fly List and Deadlands. The two-stage schedule kept the music moving throughout the afternoon and evening, with Imposters opening the Main Stage before Cartel took over at 5:30 p.m.

Long Island was well represented throughout the day. Koyo brought their hometown energy to the Bandshell stage, while Bayside took the Main Stage for an hour-long set. The Queens-formed band packed its performance with songs spanning its career, opening with “Big Cheese” before moving through fan favorites including “Sick, Sick, Sick,” “Duality,” “Already Gone,” “Montauk,” “Masterpiece” and “Blame It on Bad Luck.” Bayside closed its 13-song set with “Devotion and Desire.”

As night fell over Shorefront Park, The Used closed out the first night of the festival. Frontman Bert McCracken and the band delivered a set built around the songs that have made them a mainstay of the emo and post-hardcore scene for more than two decades. The performance featured favorites from throughout their career, including “The Taste of Ink,” “The Bird and the Worm,” “All That I’ve Got,” “I Caught Fire” and “A Box Full of Sharp Objects.”

The Used brought Day One to a close after a full afternoon and evening that showcased both established acts and rising bands across the festival’s two stages. The opening night set the tone for a diverse four-day weekend that will shift from punk and alternative rock to reggae, jam bands and more, with Sublime, Gov’t Mule and My Morning Jacket among the remaining headliners scheduled through Sunday.
