Buffalo-based band Tough Old Bird released its new single “Wednesday’s Child” on Wednesday, June 24, a folk rock song that leads with strong instrumentals and melancholy lyricism.
“Wednesday’s Child” ushers in a new era for the band, introducing a collection of new songs that showcase Tough Old Bird’s distinctive blend of resonant storytelling, rich harmonies and atmospheric arrangements. The song kicks off a summer release schedule for the band. The modern folk and indie rock group will release a new single every three weeks throughout the summer season.

The band recorded this series of singles across multiple sessions at Sunwood Studios in Trumansburg over the past year. They aim to capture the sound of the band’s live show in a studio setting. Like most of the forthcoming singles, “Wednesday’s Child” was recorded largely live in-studio, with minimal overdubs.
Tough Old Bird was formed by songwriting brothers Matthew and Nathan Corrigan in rural Western New York. The brothers grew up surrounded by music. After releasing their first full-length album, Gambling Days in 2016, Tough Old Bird spent years on the road as an acoustic duo. It released multiple albums and EPs before expanding with Brendan O’Shea on bass and Ricky Bechard on drums. “Wednesday’s Child” marks the band’s first release of new material with this new four-piece lineup. The scope of the band’s sound has widened to encompass modern folk music and indie rock, influenced as much by 90s alternative and 60s roots-rock as by traditional folk music and classic country.

These influences are evident on “Wednesday’s Child” with guitar that is reminiscent of both Americana and 90s alternative rock. The addition of drums to the band’s sound pushes it further into the realm of modern folk.
