Students from the Capital Region of New York were honored at Proctors Theatre in Schenectady on May 16. The Collaborative School of the Arts presented the ceremony, which was sponsored by the Gazette Media Group, for the 10th annual High School Musical Theatre Awards. The event celebrated 25 schools for their achievements in musical arts.
The night started with students performing a medley (a mashup of songs) from Broadway performances like Hamilton, MJ The Musical, The Outsiders, and & Juliet. Apollo Levine, who is currently appearing in MJ The Musical on Broadway as both Rob and Joseph Jackson, hosted the event.

Throughout the High School Musical Theatre Awards, schools nominated for Best Musical also performed pieces from their own musical productions. These include, Mohonasen High School’s Newsies, Queensbury High School’s The Addams Family Musical: School Edition, Shenendehowa High School’s Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812, Saratoga Springs High School’s Newsies, South Glens Falls High School’s Mamma Mia!, Voorheesville High School’s Hadestown: Teen Edition, Amsterdam High School’s Mean Girls High School Version, Hadley-Luzerne High School’s Footloose, and lastly, Warrensburg Jr./Sr. High School’s Hadestown: Teen Edition.
Additionally, Mohonasen High School won Outstanding Musical, Tier A, for Disney’s Newsies. Voorheesville High School won Tier B for Hadestown: Teen Edition. Amsterdam High School won Tier C for Mean Girls High School Version. The awards also acknowledged other various parts of theatre production, such as backstage work, student orchestra, choreography, ensemble, and individual performers’ efforts. Other winners included Mohonasen High School for Backstage Excellence, Albany High School for Outstanding Student Orchestra, Shenendehowa High School for Outstanding Choreography Execution, and Queensbury High School for Outstanding Ensemble.
Two students were also highlighted for their standout work. Lily Sinnott from Shenendehowa High School and Max Mittler from Saratoga Springs High School were named Outstanding Lead Performers. The two are expected to go to NYC in June to take part in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, alongside other student performers from across the nation. The award ceremony ended with a full-cast performance of the musical, A Chorus Line, bringing students from all the schools together on stage.
