Foxtide sells out Manhattan’s beloved Mercury Lounge

The weather in NYC is slowly getting warmer, and there’s no better way to enjoy it than a performance at the historical Mercury Lounge. Known for hailing artists big and small, the venue welcomed San Diego based band Foxtide with open arms this past Saturday, May 2.

The night opened up with Georgia based band, Hallpass. Their debut album, Spillway, easily revved up the crowd. Inspired by Flipturn and The Backseat Lovers, Hallpass leans into 90s nostalgia, relying heavily on guitar lyrics and rhythmic experimentalism. For instance, their opening track, Quarter, unfolds as an emotional slow-burn. Similar to a persistent memory, nagging on one’s conscience. Hallpass concluded with “Maine,” their most popular single.

Around 7:15, Foxtide took the stage. Formed by Elijah Gibbins-Croft, Oey James, and Ian Robles, this trio has been riding the wave for emerging indie rock artists. Blending in that surf sound from their home town with raw lyricism.

Foxtide is currently on tour for their most recent album, Entropy. A track list that can only be described as “sunset watching on the beach.” But, while battling the contradicting emotions inside one’s self, yearning for what’s next. The album feels raw, layering synth pop instrumentals over catchy guitar riffs. Each track flows seamlessly into the next for a polished finish.  According to Singer Gibbens-Croft, the band expanded past the definition of “Entropy.” Directly searching for high disorder while pushing the boundaries of what they know.

Foxtide sold out of tickets weeks in advance so Mercury Lounge was packed to the brim. Fans lined up early outside, eager to get the best view of the stage. The crowd sang along in earnest as Foxtide performed a full play throughout the album. They also included favorites such as, “My Favorite Girl Loves Reading” and “Pilot Wings.”

At this point, there was such a sense of contagious energy radiating from the band. As listeners danced in unison, others climbed on top of the couches lining the venue, reaching forward with their phones to capture snippets of the set. Likewise, Gibbins-Croft continually turned the mic to face the audience, highlighting their singing. Foxtide welcomed Hallpass to join them on stage for their final song, drawing an uproar of excitement from the pit below.

From here, the tour continues with pit stops in Ohio, Colorado, California, and more!
