Norwich, NY’s annual NBT Bank Summer Concert Series concludes this Thursday, August 26, with a performance by legendary bassist George Porter Jr. and his band, the Runnin’ Pardners, at 7:00 p.m. in Norwich’s East Park.

George Porter Jr. is regarded by some as one of the greatest bassists of all time, having made a name for himself as a founder of R&B/funk band The Meters. The Meters, born out of New Orleans in 1965, are often credited for establishing the basis of modern funk music. They eventually became the house band for Allen Toussaint’s record label, and their instrumentals can be heard on classic tracks by Earl King, Dr. John, and Lee Dorsey. In 2018, their contributions were recognized with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Porter himself has often been lending his bass skills to iconic artists, such as David Byrne and Jimmy Buffett, and famous bands, such as Dead and Company and the Tedeschi Trucks Band. Most often, though, he’s found touring alongside his Runnin’ Pardners – Michael Lemmler, Terrance Houston and Chris Adkins.

The NBT Bank Summer Concert Series is led by the nonprofit volunteer organization the Chenango Blues Association. Their events are aimed to showcase American musical styles, such as blues, jazz, and gospel, to the broadest amount of people for the lowest possible cost. This year’s festival has been providing free Thursday night performances since July 3, rounding out the lineup with George Porter Jr.’s performance on August 28.
There will be several local food and beverage vendors, including Brake from the Grind, Nina’s Pizza, and Gilligan’s Ice Cream, as well as a beer garden nearby. If you’re free this Thursday night, don’t miss out on a free outdoor performance from one of the most beloved bassists of all time.
