After multiple studio releases and growing their small but dedicated fanbase, Katrina has released their debut album. Feverish is a jam-packed 13-track debut with indie rock, post-punk, and grunge that takes after the likes of Nirvana and The Strokes.
Katrina consists of vocalist Max Mili and lead guitarist Pinky Poodles. Jack Gray, the band’s producer, also plays rhythm guitar. The band originally formed in 2022 as a duo of Mili and Poodles, working together before their first release. Four years on, their musical collaboration has made for an impressive debut.
Feverish was recorded at Virtue and Vice Studios in Brooklyn, where they previously recorded their second single, “She’s My Witch.” Jack Gray produced and mixed the entire album with additional mastering from Anthony “Rocky” Gallo. Gray is also the rhythm guitarist alongside Alex VanTassel, the session drummer for the recording of the album.
The album opens up with its only single, “Chamberlain,” an indie rock track mixed with elements of dream pop. For the first half, the album follows this sound, leaving the listener to expect the same for the remaining tracks. Instead, the band takes us for quite a ride with funky beats in “Lexie’s Song” and Mili playing the ukulele in “Moldavite.”
Lyrically, the album has feelings of angst and heartbreak. However, the sound catches up later with “This World Wasn’t Made For Me” and “Secrets That Keep.” Both songs discuss themes of internal conflict, isolation, and anxiety.
“Apathy” is a wake up for the listener, making a sharp change from the melancholic sound to something louder. “Palo Santo” and “Coveted Fall” are something straight from Alice in Chains, with guitar solos and rougher vocals. The rest of the album finishes with a gritty grunge sound, completely different from the first track.
As a debut album, Katrina shows that there’s something for everyone. The band sticks to their motto of refusing to stay in one lane with a debut album to show for it. Feverish is easily one of those debut albums that set a high standard for the band.
