February made us shiver with ever show it delivered, and here comes March to close out this winter with more hot Rochester concerts coming your way. Go see some live music this month! Here’s a handful of recommendations to whet your appetite.
March 7: Sam Grisman Project at Water Street Music Hall
Sam Grisman, son of Dawg himself, mando legend David Grisman, has been picking up steam over the last few years touring constantly with an ever-changing lineup making up the Project. It always features Rochester’s own Chris Hollywood on drums and percussion and frequently some other local talent. They plumb the depths of the elder Grisman’s music adding their own flavors along the way. Dirty Blanket, a great local bluegrass band featuring the guitar stylings of frequent Sam Grisman Project member, Max Flansburg, will open the show.
Doors open at 7pm and tickets start at $25.
March 12: Trey Anastasio at Kodak Hall
Phish guitarist TreyAnastasio doesn’t sit still for long, and in between Phish’s Mexico gigs and their west-coast spring tour he is going on a solo acoustic jaunt that will find him playing at Kodak Hall, a gorgeous theater that usually houses the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. Should be a match made in heaven.
Show starts at 7:30pm and tickets are sold out.
March 21: Mountain Stage at Kodak Hall
Another opportunity to see incredible music inside this incredible venue and we say take it! The long-running radio show is hitting the road and taking it to Rochester. On this night the guests include Loudon Wainwright III, Janiva Magness, John Ellison and local blues legend Joe Beard. As always the show will be hosted by Kathy Mattea.
Show starts at 7pm and tickets start at $25.
March 21: BASIC at LUX
Later that night Philadelphia guitar wizard Chris Forsyth is returning to LUX with his BASIC band, who are a tribute to the band BASIC, a mid-80s prog/new-wave band now practically lost to time. Douglas McCombs and Mikel Patrick Avery join Forsyth on percussion, electronics and guitars to resurrect the BASIC sound of complex and entrancing instrumentals.
Music will start around 11pm and cover is $5 at the door.
March 30: fivebyfive at Rochester Academy of Medicine
Rochester’s own classical chamber ensemble is is joining forces with multi-instrumentalist Emily Pinkerton for “Enduring Stories: ghost, murdery, & lost voices of the Appalachians and Catskills.” It will feature the world premier of “Ephemera Ballads” as well as some of Pinkerton’s earlier works, including some solo banjo pieces. Sure to be a exhilarating afternoon spent in an East Avenue mansion.
Music starts at 4pm and tickets are $20.
