Caffè Lena, the historic folk music venue in Saratoga Springs, will host DakhaBrakha, a quartet from Kyiv, Ukraine. The group will make their Saratoga debut on March 14th at 7:30 p.m. at the Spa Little Theater.

Formed in 2004 by Vladyslav Troitskyi, DakhaBrakha’s music combines Ukrainian folk traditions with global instrumentation. Their powerful vocals and diverse instrumentation create a trans-national sound rooted in Ukrainian culture. Their performances are intimate and energetic, exploring contemporary roots and rhythms.
DakhaBrakha blends folk traditions, dub, hip-hop, and global influences. Rolling Stone called their sound “folkdrone Bjorkpunk,” and the band calls it “ethno-chaos.”
“Caffè Lena has a long history of presenting American folk music and traditional music from other cultures,” says Sarah Craig, executive director of Caffè Lena. “
“It’s a thrill to work with this band. They’ve introduced many to the roots of Ukrainian music with an exciting, compelling contemporary twist.”
DakhaBrakha has performed shows worldwide and collaborated with international artists. The group includes Marko Halanevych (vocals, darbuka, table, accordion), Iryna Kovalenko (vocals, djembe, bass drums, accordion, percussion, bugay, zgaleyka, piano), Olena Tsybulska (vocals, bass drums, percussion, garmoshka), and Nina Garenetska (vocals, cello, bass drum).
The band’s mission is to share Ukrainian culture and demonstrate the country’s artistic progressiveness. “It’s important to show the world Ukraine,” says Marko Halanevych.
This performance is part of an ongoing collaboration between SPAC and Caffè Lena, featuring jointly curated programs at both venues.
Tickets for DakhaBrakha at the Spa Little Theater range from $40-$55 at spac.org.
