Matthew O’Neil Explores Our Connection to Nature on “Through to Us”

Matthew O’Neil, a Catskills-based composer, sound artist, and producer, releases his new single titled “Through to Us”, the title track of his next experimental composition LP. The single was released with a companion video.

The track starts instantly, drawing you into the atmosphere with a collection of insect sounds from nature. Opening the track with just insect sounds sets the atmosphere for the rest of the song. As the song develops, more sounds emerge, combining synths with natural elements to create a rich, life-filled atmosphere. The warm piano featured in the middle of the track adds to the ambient feeling that the track creates.

This composition runs for about eight minutes, which is refreshing in an era of increasingly shorter tracks due to modern-day algorithims. Having a longer track time allows for the song to explore more sounds and emotions that you can’t in shorter songs. It’s a unique collaboration between synths and nature that connects to something deeper that has been missing in music.

Matthew O’Neil’s Experimental Composition LP Through to Us releases on October 16 via his non-profit label Panther Mountain. It will be a collection of experimental compositions that will collaborate with nature and use alternative recording techniques. Listening is a major part of making music for Matthew O’Neil. By listening, he can pick up on the sounds nature makes and incorporate them into the music.

The accompanying video leans further into the collaboration with nature, documenting various mountains, forests, and lakes as the track plays. The slow pacing of the visuals really complements the long track time. The visuals allow the track to feel more immersive as you listen. As you watch it, the immersion and sound really accentuate the sense of connection.
