Writer/director Jane Schoenbrun will be the celebrated honoree at this year’s FilmColumbia film festival. The festival, which runs October 16-25, will be held at the newly renovated Crandell Theatre in Schoenbrun’s hometown of Chatham.
As the longest running film festival in Columbia County, FilmColumbia has showcased more than 750 films since its inception 26 years ago. Of these films, 158 have gone on to receive Academy Award nominations and 58 have won. This year’s festival will include nearly fifty unreleased long-form and short films, many of which are sure to receive similar accolades. The film program, which includes several special events and filmmaker Q&As will be available live online.
FilmColumbia 2026 will commence by honoring Chatham’s own Jane Schoenbrun at the annual Kick-Off Party on October 16 at 7pm. The party will feature appetizers and a buffet by Bimi’s Canteen, a Chatham staple. Schoenbrun recently released the critically acclaimed indie hit Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, which screened at the Crandell in August. The film is a psychosexual, blood-soaked horror-comedy that pays homage to 1980s horror classics. Schoenbrun will also be releasing a novel, Public Access Afterworld, in October, which festival attendees will have the opportunity to pre-order. Many of the highly anticipated films in FilmColumbia’s lineup have already garnered immense interest at the Cannes, Venice, and Toronto film festivals earlier this year. Big titles to watch out for include Behemoth!, All of a Sudden, The Debut, and The Condor Daughter. Additionally, there will also be an opportunity for children to engage with the art of film. The festival’s free Children’s Program will occur on October 17 at 10:30am and will feature a curated selection of classic cartoons.
FilmColumbia would not be possible without the curatorial expertise of Co-Executive and Co-Artistic Directors Peter Biskin and Laurence Kardish. Biskind is a nationally recognized film historian, cultural critic, and best-selling author, while Kardish is a senior curator emeritus for film and media at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Additionally, the festival is run by longtime Festival Director Calliope Nicholas, who is also Chief Operating Officer at Millay Arts in Austerlitz.
All FilmColumbia tickets, including All-Film Passes, go on sale to Crandell Theatre Members Only on Friday, September 25 at 12pm, and to the general public on Friday, October 2 at 12pm.
