Zakk Wylde brought Berzerkus to Long Island on Saturday, August 29, turning Northwell at Jones Beach Theater into an all-day celebration of heavy music.

Following the festival’s Friday stop at Montage Mountain in Pennsylvania, Berzerkus arrived at Jones Beach with Lamb of God, Black Label Society, Down, Suicidal Tendencies, Zakk Sabbath and Dark Chapel all performing on one stage. From the opening set at 4 p.m. until Lamb of God finished the night, the lineup moved through different generations and styles of metal without much downtime in between.

The festival was built around Zakk Wylde, but it never felt like a one-band event. Wylde pulled double duty, first appearing with Zakk Sabbath in the afternoon before returning later with Black Label Society. In between were three very different bands in Suicidal Tendencies, Down and Dark Chapel, leading into a headlining set from Lamb of God.

Dark Chapel got things started while there was still plenty of daylight inside Jones Beach. From there, Zakk Sabbath turned the afternoon into a tribute to the music of Black Sabbath, with Wylde taking on songs made famous by Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne and the band that helped lay the foundation for nearly everything that followed on the Berzerkus lineup.

The pace changed when Suicidal Tendencies hit the stage. Their mix of hardcore punk, thrash and crossover metal gave the festival one of its most frantic stretches of the day. Decades after first emerging from Venice, California, the band still brought the attitude and energy that made them stand apart from traditional metal bands in the first place.

As the sun began to disappear behind Jones Beach, the festival shifted into heavier territory with Down. Their slower, crushing sound was a sharp contrast to the speed of Suicidal Tendencies before them. The set also produced one of the night’s biggest collaborations when Kenny Hickey, Robin Mazen and Greyson Nekrutman joined Down onstage for the ending of “Bury Me in Smoke.”

Then it was time for Wylde to return.

Black Label Society took the stage after dark, giving the festival’s creator a second chance to command the Jones Beach crowd. This time it was his own catalog at the center of the set, along with a performance of Ozzy Osbourne’s “No More Tears.” With Wylde having already played a full Zakk Sabbath set earlier in the day, the back-to-back appearances showed just how much Berzerkus revolves around his musical history and influences.

But the final spot belonged to Lamb of God.

By the time the Richmond, Virginia band took the stage at 9:50 p.m., Jones Beach had gone from an afternoon festival into a full-scale nighttime metal show. Lamb of God wasted little time, opening with “Ruin” before following with “Laid to Rest” and “Now You’ve Got Something to Die For.”

Randy Blythe remained the focal point at the front of the stage while the band worked through a 13-song set spanning different points in its career. The second half became particularly heavy on longtime favorites, with “512,” “Walk With Me in Hell” and “Omerta” all appearing before the closing stretch.

After hours of music and five bands before them, Lamb of God still had the job of sending the crowd home with something left in the tank. “Memento Mori” and “Hourglass” pushed the set toward its finish before “Redneck” closed both Lamb of God’s performance and the Jones Beach edition of Berzerkus.

Berzerkus worked because it wasn’t simply six metal bands placed on the same bill. Zakk Sabbath represented the music that helped start it all, Suicidal Tendencies brought hardcore and crossover into the mix, Down slowed everything into a heavy Southern groove, Black Label Society put Wylde back at the center of his own festival, and Lamb of God showed why they were given the final slot.

For nearly eight hours, Jones Beach belonged to heavy music.
