The Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra will present “In the Beginning,” a journey through Finland and Russia’s musical landscape, on March 29 at Forum Theatre’s Recital Hall.

For the finale of the orchestra’s 2024-2025 Symphonic Series, Music Director Maestro Daniel Hege, pianist Andrew Russo and the BPO will celebrate works from Einojuhani Rautavaara, Jean Sibelius and Sergei Rachmaninoff. These composers are known as one of the most significant within the 20th century classical music world. With music emulating Finnish creation myths, landscapes and Russian Romanticism, this performance will bring brilliant musicality to complete the orchestra’s series.
Prior to the concert, audience members are invited to a pre-concert lecture led by the Philharmonic’s Director of Education and Community Engagement, titled “The Musical Politics of Nostalgia,” discussing the influence of nationalism and exile in compositions by Sibelius and Rachmaninoff. The lecture will take place in the Forum Theatre’s Recital hall on March 29 at 6:30 p.m.

Syracuse native and pianist Andrew Russo is known for his diverse interests and experiences across the worlds of business, music and politics. He is a graduate of The Juilliard School and has performed all around the world, including Paris, London, Tokyo, New York and more. He performed as a finalist in the 2001 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, becoming the first pianist to perform a significant piece using alternate techniques.
The Binghamton Philharmonic is the Southern Tier’s largest and longest-serving professional symphony orchestra. Founded by Fritz and Marianne Wallnberg, the orchestra has continued for over 70 years with the purpose of performing live, full-scale orchestral works.
