New York City’s London Plane explores the absurdity of fervent political devotion in newest single “NATION NATION.” This post-punk dance track epitomizes their unique sound while painting a theatrical picture of submission with the companion music video released October 21.
Based in New York City, London Plane is a diverse six-piece group with members coming from New Zealand, Pakistan, Sweden, and both coasts of the United States. The band first emerged with 2018’s New York Howl, followed by Bright Black in 2022.
Produced by former Interpol bassist Carlos Dengler and released via Declared Goods, “NATION NATION” offers an exciting preview of the band’s third album due in early 2027.
London Plane captures their signature dance-pop sound on “NATION NATION” while leaning into their darker political side. The bright frenzied guitar, steady drums, and theatrical vocal performance drive the emotional urgency found in the narrative.
The lyrics are deeply ironic and absurd as the narrator grapples with their place within the political system. Sycophantic and manipulated, the lyrics of “NATION NATION” provide a glimpse into the mind of someone taken advantage of by their government and turned into a political weapon.
The music video presents the story of a young man in a vulnerable position being recruited by an organization. What begins as a story of salvation quickly shifts into something more jarring, as the recruiter gradually influences the young man in is placed parallel to images of soldiers who all look identical. The imagery of pills at the climax of the video brings the lyrical promise of “harmony” and “liv[ing] forever” to life, as the video ultimately argues that this institutional promise is a hallucination.
“NATION NATION,” the single and music video, offer a fierce commentary on political conformity through an ironic and confrontational lens.
London Plane will continue their monthly Brooklyn Main Drag residency Saturday, October 24. For ticket information, visit bandnada.com.
