NYS DanceForce, an organization dedicated to facilitating and funding dance initiatives across New York State, will provide support to a series of dance events at five colleges during the 2026-27 season. Skidmore College, the University at Albany, EMPAC at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), Russell Sage College, and Union College will host a collection of live dance performances, film screenings, artist talks, and more.
Skidmore College will begin the series on Friday, Oct. 30 with a visit from New York movement artists Baye & Asa. This duo’s stay at Skidmore will include a performance of their work “Suck It Up” and a screening of their film “Second Seed.”
The series will continue at the University at Albany on Saturday, Nov. 7. UAlbany’s resident dance ensemble, Capital Duo, will join the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company in a program that includes a variety of dance pieces, including a premiere work choreographed to music by Icelandic composer María Huld Markan Sigfúsdóttir.
Next, on Thursday, Nov. 12, EMPAC at RPI will host Heidi Latsky, who is a dancer, choreographer, and disability advocate. Latsky will be featured in the November installment of EMPAC’s Interface program. The monthly Interface series facilitates discussion among artists, engineers, scientists, and designers, giving people across disciplines the opportunity to discuss their creative and scientific processes.
Latsky will also be involved in Russell Sage College’s event in the NYS DanceForce series. On Tuesday, Nov. 17, Latsky will show audiences her 35-minute documentary “Living in the Grey,” which uses dance to help draw attention to non-apparent neurological disabilities.
Union College will bring the series into the new year, with Doug Varone and Dancers performing “Stripped” on Friday, Jan. 29. This show illuminates choreographer Varone’s creative process, with his insightful commentary helping audiences understand the art form.
Finally, UAlbany will host once again to close out the season. Capital Duo will return to the stage, this time alongside Albany Berkshire Ballet, on Sunday, Apr. 4.
Each of these dance events is open to the public, and many of them are also completely free to attend.
