An acoustic show at the intimate Silver Lining Lounge is never something to miss and with Linda Perry in the mix, it’s hard to beat. In honor of Hulu’s documentary release this Friday as well as Perry’s latest musical release, fans gathered this past Tuesday, September 15 to celebrate. With a menu dishing out floral cocktails and trays of oysters, attendees awaited the acoustic performance by relaxing back upon the faux-leather and velvet couches.
As the light dimmed and reflections from the disco ball speckled the audience, singer Audrey McGraw took the stage. Declaring that this was her only time performing an acoustic set, she started the night off with the first song she ever released; a cover of Neil Diamond’s “I Am…I Said.” Yet, with roots in Nashville, she replaced the lyrics, “New-York” with her home. Because of powerful vocals and strong ballads, listeners kept their attention fixed on the stage. Finding comfort in melancholic melodies, McGraw beckoned listeners to sing along to her song, “I feel beautiful when I cry.” The set concluded with a cover of “Barracuda” by Heart, earning whoops and hollers from the crowd below.
Shortly after, Linda Perry entered in a whirlwind. Her iconic tall-crowned felt hat atop her head as she beckoned her step-daughter to join her near the front of the stage. Silver Lining Lounge became an outlet for Perry, harnessing her vivid storytelling and dispersing it across the packed venue. Amidst cracking jokes and heart-wrenching vocals, Perry announced how grateful she is to channel out her emotions through music.
Rather than spending her day stuck in the studio, giving her energy to those un-deserving, Perry has been focusing her time on more personal projects. Her recent record, Let It Die Here is a tribute to her childhood. The trauma she grew up with finally finding release. “What Lies With You” declares Perry’s love for her mother even through conflicting emotions overtaking everyday thoughts.
Between tracks, talent manager, Scott Lipps, came on stage to ask a few questions, specifically about the future regarding Perry’s band, 4 Non Blondes. Linda Perry promised fans that a new album is in the works, titled 1994. A tribute to how Perry sounded and wrote like back then.
At this point, it seemed like a no-brainer to end the night with 4 Non Blondes’ number one hit. A sea of phones took over as the beginning guitar strums of “What’s Up?” began to be heard. Audience members burst in laughter as they messed up lyrics, receiving critiques from Perry on stage. Spirits high and harmonies melding together, Perry received a standing ovation for the evening’s production.
