The Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra will open its 2026-27 season with a “Passionate Discovery” concert on September 26. The 7:30 p.m. show at the Broome County Forum Theatre will feature classical masterpieces and historic moments.
The concert will begin with the classical masterpieces. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Overture to Don Giovanni”, arranged by Ferruccio Busoni opens with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture” to follow.
Florence Price’s boundary-breaking “Symphony No. 1 in E Minor” will close out the show, highlighting an important historical first in music history. In 1933, Price broke racial and gender barriers by becoming the first African American woman to have her composition, this symphony, performed by a major U.S. orchestra.
Founded in 1955 by cellist and composer Fritz Wallenberg and violinist Marianne Wallenberg, also his wife, the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra is the largest and longest-serving professional symphony orchestra in the Southern Tier of New York.
Originally the Binghamton Symphony and Choral Society, the Wallenberg’s started it to perform full-scale orchestral works live. In 1996, the Symphony merged with BC Pops Orchestra, formed in 1974 by Russell Hawkes and violinist and conductor David Agard, and became the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra.
Led by Maestro Daniel Hege, appointed as Music Director in 2018, the orchestra was awarded the American Prize in Orchestral Performance in 2024. The award recognizes the best performances from orchestras in America. It was selected among other applicants across America based on videos of performances.
Now, the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra serves up to 10,000 annually through its affordable programming. For the “Passionate Discovery” concert, children 17 and under can experience the show for free. Its mission is to “Build Community Through The Power of Live Music.”
The next event in the 2026-2027 season comes at 3 p.m. October 11. The Champlain trio, violinist Letitia Quante, cellist Emily Taubl and pianist Hiromi Fukuda, will perform as a part of the Phelps Mansion Museum Series.
