Trey Anastasio, frontman and guitarist of Phish, just wrapped up his solo acoustic tour with two amazing shows at the Capitol Theatre. Both shows featured Phish classics, deep cuts, and beloved Trey banter which can best be referred to as “story time.”

On the second night of the Capitol Theatre show Trey opened up with “Backwards Down the Number Line,” a song about birthdays and friendship. Trey has definitely accumulated a lot of friends over the years and seems like such a genuine, nice guy that all of his fans seem like friends. Trey played a few songs solo featuring “When the Words Go Away” and “Mountains in the Mist” before being joined by Jeff Tanski on keys, with whom he played many hours of music with during the Covid pandemic.

The duo started with “First Tube” and proceeded to play “Waste,” “Sand,” and “The Divided Sky.” The room was packed with attentive fans who were eagerly listening to some of their favorite songs reimagined into acoustic versions. Chompers were shushed, and most people were sitting, a stark contrast to the sea of dancing found at a Phish show.

Trey proceed to play some more songs solo featuring fan favorites like “Free,” “Back on The Train,” and “NICU.” He gave a short story about “Strange Design” about how he wrote the song right before his first daughter was born, 30 years ago, and about how fast time flies by.

Tanski again joined Trey for the remainder of the show and this is when the heavy hitters were played like “My Friend, My Friend,” “Ghost,” a deep cut of Ghosts of the Forest, and “The Squirming Coil.” The last three songs of the set had everyone rejoicing as they were truly some of the favorites from the Phish catalog: “The Lizards,” “Harry Hood,” and “Tweezer Reprise.”

Trey began his encore with the classic “Slave to the Traffic Light” followed by a touching “A Life Beyond the Dream.” To close out a successful tour and two sold out shows Trey played every Phish fan’s favorite Phish song “You Enjoy Myself.” People were dancing and vibing in the back as it’s hard to contain oneself when the song transitions from composed masterpiece to funky groove. Boy, man what a special show this was.

Trey demonstrates that these songs are rich in composition and intricacies which can be felt and explored without Fishman on drums and Mike’s bass bombs, or even CK5’s rig. These shows are deep, intimate dive into the songwriting and compositions of the beloved Phish catalog, a real treat for the veteran Phish fans. These shows are truly gifts and I’m sure Trey enjoyed them as much as his fans.
