Jazz ensemble Planet Kniffen is releasing their next jazz-infused album titled Forward Motion. The album takes an experimental approach, integrating other genres such as rock, funk, and pop unlike any other jazz album. The album releases on June 19 on all streaming platforms.
The ensemble is led by Darryl Kniffen, who takes on triple duty with composing, drumming, and leading the band. Trumpeter Dylan Canterbury, saxophonist Matthew Steckler, guitarist Shaun McCarthy, pianist Franz Robert, keyboardist Wayne Hawkins, guitarist Andrew Mollica, and bassist Jason Emmond make up the rest of the ensemble.

Forward Motion is the second release from the jazz band, following the release of their debut album Dreamland in 2018. Originally from Saratoga Springs, Kniffen cites that the new album is a testament to his journey as a musician so far and hopes that the listener can relate it to their own experiences.
“This album serves as a reflection of the progress I’ve made both professionally and personally.” He shared. “I invite the listener to consider their own journey, appreciate their progress, and imagine what exciting things lie ahead.”
The opening track “Forward Motion” has the usual jazz sound, making the listener believe this will be another regular jazz album. Anastasiia Pysarenko provides the only vocals on the album, harmonizing with the rest of the ensemble.
“Rain Dancer” kicks off the fusion of other genres, with elements of rock playing at the end of the track. “Fact or Fiction” gives ska punk vibes throughout the track similar to No Doubt, with a twist of going for a spaced-out vibe with added cinematic sounds.

“Escape” and “Jubilee” are more upbeat tracks, going for a pop rhythm that sounds like something you’d hear from a video game. “Something About Us” acts as the bridge between the genre-bending shift, with a chill pop sound with a powerful saxophone.
The ending track feels like a farewell in true fashion. “Dirty Birdy Blues” has the flute in full swing here, also played by Matthew Steckler. The album doesn’t end without giving us one more curveball, ending with a funky metal groove that gets you booping.
Forward Motion is a modern jazz album that takes on its name in stride. Each track sets itself apart from the typical sound you’d expect from a jazz album. With the infusion of different sounds, Planet Kniffen is an innovative piece to the genre.
