NYC Queer Harpist Stephanie Babirak Shares Haunting Single “Moon River”

NYC-based harpist, singer-songwriter, and composer Stephanie Babirak shared her new single “Moon River” on May 22. Additionally, she has an upcoming album, Rotten Fruit, that will be released on June 12.

“Moon River” is connected to the larger themes of Rotten Fruit. Specifically, the album discusses guilt, love, disillusionment, and the moment when someone’s actions finally show who they really are.

“Though the album borrows from inherited language and familiar symbolism, its concerns are rooted in the present. It asks what happens when words and actions no longer match, and what follows once clarity sets in,” said Psychedelic Baby Mag. “Rather than offering resolution, ‘Rotten Fruit’ traces the gradual movement from disbelief to acceptance, and the uneasy sense of freedom that comes with it.”

While Stephanie Babirak has built her sound around the harp, it isn’t solely a classical vibe. Her music combines her classical training with indie folk and art-pop.

“In Babirak’s hands, the harp sheds its recital-hall expectations and becomes something far more intimate and unsettled,” said The Luna Collective. “Where her earlier work hinted at this duality, Rotten Fruit fully inhabits it.”

Moreover, the single was made with Peter Scoma, who’s been her longtime collaborator. He even plays some guitar and sings harmonies in “Moon River.” The album also brings in producer and mixer Josh Benash of Kiss Kiss. The three of them met while studying at SUNY Purchase.

“Moon River” is available to stream, and the album Rotten Fruit will be released on June 12.
