New Album from Tommy Z Captures Energy of Live Colombia Show

Buffalo-based blues guitarist Tommy Z released new album Tommy Z is Live in Colombia Oct. 23. Believed to be the first blues album released in Colombia by an American artist, it captures the energy and live music from a performance at the Teatro Santander, or Santander Theater, in Bucaramanga, Colombia.

The hour-long album flows through his performance from start to finish. With sounds from the crowd and groovy improvisational-style blues, the energy from the performers and audience is palpable. The award-winning guitar player, singer and songwriter melds blues with pop, rock, jazz and funk.

A Buffalo Music Hall of Famer, Tommy Z is the frontman of his own group as a national and international headliner, is a co-frontman with bassist Benny Turner and a sideman to artists like Grammy-winner Pinetop Perkins.

Tommy Z has also toured for the US troops in Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa, Europe, Asia and Micronesia with the United Service Organizations and Armed Forces Entertainment. This album was on his third tour of Colombia as a cultural ambassador in 2023.

Tommy Z has released three self-produced albums — Sometimes (2013), Blizzard of Blues (2016) and Plug in and Play (2023). All were received with critical acclaim and made it on the Top 5 Billboard Blues, Top 5 iTunes Blues and number one charting and selling artist at Amazon, Roots Report and more.

In 2018 and 2019, he performed at the second biggest New Year’s Eve Ball Drop in the country, and was scheduled to return in 2020 before the Covid shutdown. Also in 2019, he headlined festivals in Denmark and Colombia. Tommy has also composed TV and film music for the “Red Hot Chili Pepper’s Biography” on A&E and wrote the St. Louis Blues (NHL) victory song in 2009.
