Avery Friedman Sows the Seeds of Love in New Single “You Move”

Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Avery Friedman released her newest single, “You Move,” today, Oct. 9. Alongside a music video, the song offers listeners a glimpse of what to expect in Friedman’s next album, which will be released in 2027.

“You Move” opens with layers of humming synths, over which Friedman’s light voice eases the transition into a perky bass line. Her vocals, though gentle, take center stage throughout the song in both melody and background roles. Guitar, saxophone, bass, and drums bring energetic momentum to Friedman’s lyrics, which explore the mingled uncertainty and ecstasy that characterize the beginning of a new relationship.

Originally from Cleveland, OH, Friedman is now based in Brooklyn. Her 2025 debut album New Thing introduced audiences to her confessional, emotional style of songwriting, and since its release she has performed alongside a variety of artists including Mt. Joy, Speedy Ortiz, and Mallory Hawk.

“You Move,” Friedman’s first new release since New Thing, comes in advance of the singer’s first UK and EU tour. The tour will run from Oct. 31 to Nov. 15, beginning at the London Calling Festival in Amsterdam and concluding at Neue Zukunft in Berlin.

In the song’s whimsical music video, Friedman dances in a scarlet crop top that matches the bright red of the tomatoes that appear throughout the video in a variety of quirky contexts. The singer plugs headphones into a tomato clipped to her belt, holds a pair of tomatoes up to her eyes like binoculars, and squeezes the juice out of a tomato in an image that also serves as the cover photo for the single.

“You Move is about savoring the unexpected fruits that reveal themselves amid times of uprootedness,” Friedman explained. “It is a song about putting trust in the glimmer of new love, and carefully sowing the seeds for it to sustain. Both thematically and sonically, it’s about searching, surrendering and allowing yourself to relish.”

The thorough enjoyment Friedman describes is palpable in the “You Move” music video. With bright sunlight, Friedman’s carefree dancing, and the ubiquitous tomatoes, the video captures the essence of the song: embracing the pleasure of something new beginning to blossom.

“You Move” is available now on streaming platforms including Spotify.
