Phantogram brought dance hits and deep cuts to Brooklyn’s Elsewhere for a sold-out DJ set of electronica, hip hop, and pop classics on Saturday, September 26. Supported by Laila Amira, the music duo had the crowd dancing and singing along for the entirety of their two-hour set.
Opener Laila Amira started the night with good vibes as the crowd slowly trickled in, treating early attendees to an ambitious mix of disco, house, electro, and techno. Amira, a Brooklyn native who also hosts Made in the Club on Newtown Radio, prides herself on her genre-defying mixes, and Saturday’s set was no exception.
Phantogram hit the decks soon after, as vocalist Sarah Barthel and multi-instrumentalist Josh Carter opened their set with “Do You Feel Me (City Soul Project Club Mix) by NY’s Finest, sending the crowd into a frenzy. Radiohead’s “Idioteque” immediately followed; the Kid A classic turning the dancefloor inward as the vibe became contemplative and heady.
The night featured a seamless blend of dance classics, including the Dare’s remix of “Mannequin Love” by Justice and the Flints, the Soulwax remix of “A Hero’s Death” by Fontaines D.C., “Got to Keep On” by the Chemical Brothers, and an especially effective spin of “Grateful” by El Michels Affair & Black Thought that made the crowd explode. Tyler, the Creator’s “Earthquake/New Magic Wand” and “Asuna” by Mortals kept the crowd moving before playing the Knife’s “Heartbeats,” a universal crowd-pleaser that had everyone singing along.
Towards the end of the set, frontman Sarah Barthel took to the mic for the Phantogram classic “When I’m Small,” the audience hanging on her every word and singing every lyric with reverence and passion. Toto’s “Africa” and Lipps Inc.’s “Funkytown” kept the party going before the duo closed out their set with their track “Black Out Days.” The eclectic mix of tracks showcased the group’s wide knowledge of dance music, balancing bangers with more obscure mixes and guaranteeing no one left unsatisfied.
