Brooklyn Bowl has announced the 15 mmth annual Musical Rosh Hashanah event. Taking place on September 12, the service will be a musical celebration for the holiday, along with other traditions.
The entire service will be hosted by Rabbi Daniel Brenner and musical director Jeremiah Lockwood. Starting at 10am, the day will have a Torah reading and procession, shofar blowing, guided meditation, teachings, and communal prayer.
The Brooklyn Bowl’s Rosh Hashanah event looks to intertwine live music with Jewish culture. Over the last 15 years, the event has seen appearances from members of Vampire Weekend, Soulive, Taper’s Choice, and more.
“Music is an aspect of Jewish communal and intellectual life where ideas are put into practice in a way that many people are open to.” Musical director Lockwood explains. “Even folks who are otherwise ambivalent about their connection to the life of the spirit and Jewish religion/culture.”
A musical ensemble will be led by Lockwood, bringing live music to the venue and the celebration. Members of the ensemble include saxophonist Stuart Bogie, Antibalas members Jordan McLean and Timothy Allen, and more.
Ahead of the holiday celebrations, Rabbi Brenner emphasizes the importance of music now more than ever before. “The more we turn to the artificial and algorithmic the more our souls need the detoxing combo of ancient harmonies and introspection to stay in balance. We move into 5787 with both fear and optimism, hoping for a year of renewal and healing.”
On September 11, Rabbi Brenner and Lockwood will also host a First Night Rosh Hashanah service. The ensemble and additional musicians will be performing live music at Nublu Classic in Manhattan. Traditional service will also take place, with tickets available for purchase here.
Tickets to the Brooklyn Bowl event on September 12 are available for purchase here. All proceeds will go to the organization Shalom Y’all Jams. The organization works to make Jewish holiday services more accessible to the community.
