The Black Arts and Cultural Festival returns to Albany this summer. On July 31 and August 1, the festival will bring music, storytelling, and a weekend-long celebration of Black culture. Empire State Plaza will host the festival and feature well-known musical names. The entire weekend is free to attend.
The festival is being hosted by New York State Office of General Services in collaboration with the City of Albany Department of Recreation. It has been a long-standing event in the Capital Region, running for over three decades and counting.
The festival is taking place over two nights. From 5pm to 8pm, July 31 will be Gospel Night at the Outdoor Main Stage. A gospel showcase from Rev. Joy celebrates faith and spirituality in the area. Four-time GRAMMY Award nominee Melvin Crispell III will continue to spread that faith through the power of his music and vocals. Alongside him are fellow gospel singers Crystal Aikin and Rich Tolbert Jr.
From 12pm to 8pm, August 1 will act as the finale for the festival. Activities are available throughout the day, including food competitions, runway shows, and a kids play place. The Powerhouse Funk Band are combining neo-soul, funk, jazz, and R&B for an unforgettable performance. This will be followed by R&B singer Lloyd, who will close out the festival, playing into the night.
The weekend festivities are a part of a bigger series of events and concerts taking place at the Plaza. Summer at the Plaza will have free concerts and festivals featuring artists Ghostface Killah, Miriam Cruz, Starship, and more. Additionally, events such as outdoor movies and fitness will take place all summer.
