Liz Hogg’s newest album, Goodbye World Hello Something, is a 10-track journey of indie pop and eclectic tunes. With just her guitar and lyrics, she’s able to captivate listeners cheerfully and emotionally.
An instrumentalist at heart, she is well-known for her ability to play electric and classic guitar, as well as being a composer. Based in Brooklyn, Hogg has made a name for herself playing in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Brooklyn Bowl. She has also performed internationally in countries such as Mexico, Japan, and Argentina.
Hogg herself did production for the album, given her prior experience in mixing. She wrote all 10 songs for the album in less than a month between September and October 2024. Implementing a meticulous songwriting style, she used close to 300 song snippets she calls “kernels” to help with creating the songs.
A year later, Goodbye World Hello Something released in its entirety. Most tracks have a unique tale of inspiration behind it and great influence from The Beatles. Each song on the album was written in two sessions, a choice that was taken from the songwriting style of John Lennon.
The opening track, “Things I Said Before,” is exactly what the title suggests. The classic acoustic guitar acts as a backing track before combining with an electric guitar solo. The lyrics detail a potential love song where she voices the frustration of not being heard by her partner and deciding not to waste her time.
“Belly” is an interesting track, and one that brings a laugh to listeners. It’s a song that literally speaks about loving a partner’s belly, an unconventional choice. Still, it’s a catchy tune that gets you jumping around on your feet.
“Master and Commander” acts as the halfway point of the album as the second-longest track. It’s very slow and dreamy, taking us on a journey through a push-and-pull of two people in love. The track ends with a serenade that seemingly transitions into the next half of the album.
A track that begins differently than the others, “Instructions for the Physical World” sticks out among the rest. A bit more gloomy with her vocalizing in the back, the song speaks to the feeling of time running out from a woman’s perspective. The album then closes out with “One Thread,” a classic Beatles-influenced track.
To support the release of her new album, Liz Hogg will be going on tour across the U.S. and Canada. She will make a few stops across New York, including Rochester, Albany, Brooklyn, Buffalo, and more. The tour kicks off in September and runs through to December, with more locations to be announced.
