Jack Johnson brought his SURFILMUSIC Tour to Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (CMAC) in Canandaigua, on Wednesday, July 1, joined by Hermanos Gutiérrez for a night that felt more like a California sunset than a night on Canandaigua Lake. Across four distinct sets, Johnson traded his usual laid-back groove for something a little more adventurous, bringing his openers back out not once but twice for genuine collaboration rather than just a quick cameo.
Opening the night were Hermanos Gutiérrez, the Ecuadorian-Swiss brother duo of Alejandro and Estevan Gutiérrez, known for their reverb-drenched, cinematic guitar work. Their connection to Johnson runs deeper than your typical support slot — the trio worked together in the studio with longtime producer Mario Caldato Jr. (In Between Dreams, Sleep Through the Static) to craft “Hold On To The Light,” the song built for Johnson’s new SURFILMUSIC project. That partnership carried straight through into the set, as the duo returned to the stage with Johnson twice throughout the evening.

Rather than one continuous set, Johnson split the night into four chapters. He opened with a run of full-band favorites, folding “Mudfootball,” “Flake,” and “In the Summertime” into one another before easing into “Sitting, Waiting, Wishing” and a “Bubble Toes” / “Take the Money and Run” pairing. The weather couldn’t have cooperated more — warm air and a light breeze rolled across the lawn, making it easy to forget you were in the Finger Lakes at all rather than somewhere along the California coast. Johnson closed out the opening set by bringing Hermanos Gutiérrez back to the stage for “Hold On To The Light,” the first of the night’s two collaborations.

From there, the show shifted gears entirely for a dedicated “September Sessions” set, with the duo staying onstage alongside Johnson for a run through “Drink the Water,” “Time to Think,” “Symbol in My Driveway,” and “F-Stop Blues.”
The band returned for a third set packed with staples — “Banana Pancakes,” “I Got You,” and a “Roadrunner” / “Shot Reverse Shot” pairing — along with an “Upside Down” / “Time Is the Master” / “Badfish” medley that gave a nod to Sublime. Jack Johnson then stripped everything down for a solo acoustic run, pulling a fan up onstage to trade verses on “Home” before working through a cover of Sublime’s “Boss DJ,” “Rodeo Clowns,” “Sleep Through the Static,” “Same Girl,” “Do You Remember,” and “Angel.”
The full band returned for the encore, closing the night with “Better Together” — a fitting way to wrap up a show built around collaboration. The SURFILMUSIC Tour continues on to Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville, IN on July 4.
