A premiere of a new documentary, All The Music In The World, will be held on July 19 at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center. Focused on the life of legendary classical pianist Emanuel Ax, the documentary captures his artistry and craftsmanship at work.

Ax has built a name for himself in classical music. His work in chamber music led to his collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma, Leonidas Kavakos, and Isaac Stern. He has been able to win eight GRAMMY Awards throughout his career, along with 21 nominations. This year, he was named Artist of the Year by Musical America.

Tanglewood is home to the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) and has been a huge part of Ax’s career. Located in the Berkshires, it is home to the Tanglewood Music Center and the annual summer festival. In 1978, he made his musical debut with the BSO at Tanglewood, then starting his longtime history with the venue.

The film will feature some of the achievements and moments from Ax’s career. Aside from his Tanglewood concerto, it also sees him preparing for the event the year before. This features the creation of the score and practice leading up to the concerto.

Director Joseph Levy is an experienced filmmaker with award-winning documentaries under his belt. As a young kid, Levy watched Ax perform with Yo-Yo Ma in Lincoln Center. 35 years later, he spoke about the experience of being able to make the film.

“He believes deeply in the power of music and in the privilege of sharing it with an audience, yet carries with him standards so exacting that they leave little room for satisfaction.” He said. “It is that tension – between the joy of making music and the pressure of living up to his own expectations – that lies at the heart of the film.”

Tickets to the premiere are available online here. The special premiere will feature a conversation from director Joseph Levy and Emanuel Ax.
