University of Rochester’s EPAM Center Names Lam Professor of Music and Medicine

The University of Rochester’s Eastman Performing Arts Medicine (EPAM) Center, a joint venture between the Eastman School of mlMusic and the university’s School of Medicine and Dentistry, has named Dr. David M. Greenberg as the first-ever Evans Lam Professor of Music and Medicine.

David Greenberg

Dr. Greenberg is a cognitive psychologist and neuroscientist with a specialization in researching music’s role in the fields of medicine, neuroscience and artificial intelligence. Using advanced computational models, he strives to understand how the acoustics of music interact with the human brain and emotional capacities.

With this research, Dr. Greenberg aims to find ways to apply music for personalized medicine in treating conditions such as autism and PTSD. He has several accolades to his name, including being the recipient of community service and early career prizes from the National Institutes for Health and the European Society for the Cognitive Sciences of Music.

The position of Lam Professor was made possible by University of Rochester Board of Trustee member Evans Lam. In this newly created position, Dr. Greenberg will develop a national and international research profile on the intersections of music and medicine. His duties will include overseeing and strengthening the research portfolio of EPAM, designing the research strategy in collaboration with university-wide faculty members, securing external funding, writing for highly ranked academic journals, and being actively involved in scholarly and professional activities.

“I’m grateful to the University of Rochester and to Evans Lam for their vision in creating this professorship. By building a bridge between a world-class medical school and a world-class music school, we have a rare opportunity—unimaginable just a few decades ago—to advance a truly scientific understanding of music and its therapeutic potential, and to translate those discoveries into health innovations that will improve lives for generations to come.”

Dr. Greenberg’s research experience includes his tenure as co-chief principal investigator on clinical music therapy trials in autism at the University of Cambridge, as well as being a Zuckerman STEM Leadership Fellow at Bar-Ilan University. He also served as senior scientific advisor at Spotify for many years, where as lead of a team of data scientists, he designed features for Spotify Wrapped that reached over 130 million users worldwide.

Dr. Greenberg is also the chief science officer and co-founder at CHIME Health AI Inc., which uses human responses to music to screen for neurodevelopmental and mental health conditions. His background in music comes from Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts, where he studied jazz performance and trained in the saxophone.

EPAM has funded pilot projects with the UR Aging Institute, the Pluta Cancer Center, and numerous other artists and research scientists working at this intersection. In addition, EPAM also provides clinical music therapy sessions in their hospitals and specializes in treating musicians suffering physical injuries.
