The Withered Tour: d4vd Tosses Labubus at Terminal 5

On August 19th, the Withered tour, headlined by d4vd with support from Laundry Day, hit New York City. The lines at Terminal 5 extended around the entire building, and the excitement was palpable. This was d4vd’s night, a return to his home city following his debut album, Withered.

The venue, a multilevel space known for the dynamic atmosphere, was packed to the rafters, with fans of all ages united by a connection to the introspective, somber world of his music. His fanbase is extremely wide, ranging from heart-throbbing romantics to introspective, angsty listeners. Opening for d4vd was Laundry Day, an indie pop band based in New York.

Kicking off the night was the local New York-based band, Laundry Day. Their first show as the opening act for d4vd was a perfect choice, bringing a raw, unvarnished energy that punched in the tone for the evening. Their style, a mix of indie rock, pop, and punk, felt familiar and fresh, a showcase of their local roots and their presence.

The band members, shredding their guitars and leaping across the stage, exuded a sense of joy and passion. Their music, which features catchy hooks and complex instrumental work, resonates deeply with their Gen Z crowd. They were more just a warm-up act, acting as a significant part of the night’s atmosphere, winning over new fans with every song.

For their performance at Terminal 5, Laundry Day’s set list was a blend of their most popular songs, curated to create an extremely engaging set. They opened with “R U READY?” which instantly had the front rows moving. The energy continued with fan favorites like “I KINDA LIKE THAT” and “SUPERMODEL,” both of which showcased their ability to create music that forces you to dance. The band’s versatility was on full display as they transitioned from the upbeat track “Damn Shame” to their standout track “Lavender.” Finally, switching into “Aperol Spritz” and “Jane” to create a melody for the lovebirds in the audience. Following came the final track from the HOMESICK album, “FRIENDS.” The set concluded with a surprising and highly entertaining track, “Why is everyone a DJ?” which turned the venue into a giant dance festival.

D4vd is an American singer and songwriter, whose real name is David Anthony Burke. Gaining a lot of attention through his viral hits on TikTok, particularly “Romantic Homicide” and “Here with Me.” He originally started making music to avoid copyright strikes on his Fortnite montage videos. When d4vd took the stage, he ran into “What Are You Waiting For?”, a high-tempo opener that surprised everyone. Following came “Sky,” a song that especially showcased his vocal range in a melancholy track. His stage presence was amazing, moving with a natural swagger. The set continued with “Somewhere In the Middle” and “Friends Again,” following the same despondent tone of his earlier track, but with a more heartfelt and emotional approach, focusing on themes of failed love and friendship. Then came the triad of songs, “Backstreet Girl,” “Sleep Well,” and “Here With Me,” showcasing the multiple stages of a relationship, from infatuation to heartbreak and finally desire, giving a level of depth to each song. Finally, putting a pause to his tracks from Petals to Thorns, came “You And I,” followed by “WORTHLESS.”

The set featured numerous tracks from his debut album, Withered, namely “Crashing,” “One More Dance,” and “Is This Really Love.” He then followed up with his single, “I’d Rather Pretend,” featuring Bryant Barnes, an earlier starter on his tour. The emotional depth continued with “Always Love,” a collaboration with Hyunjin of Stray Kids. Before fan-favorite and anticipated “The Bridge” took the stage, causing fans to scream in excitement, the song “Feel It” followed. This track from The Incredibles led the audience to feel it. “Leave Her” and “My House Is Not a Home” cooled the audience down with calming tracks. Finally, ending the show, “Afterlife” and “Romantic Homicide” followed, two of his debut songs that resonated with his entire audience.
