Under the direction of Music Director Stuart Malina, the Lake Placid Sinfonietta is a professional summer orchestra composed of 20 accomplished orchestral musicians from across the country. Founded in 1917 as a private Hotel Orchestra, the ensemble has evolved into a community supported nonprofit for the last 40 years.

As the Adirondacks’ Orchestra, their mission consists of using the power of music to entertain, educate and inspire people of all ages.

Malina has held his position as Music Director since September 2019. He has brought decades of leadership and musical experience to the ensemble. He is also in his 22nd season as Music Director and Conductor of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, where his tenure has been marked by both artistic excellence and organizational growth. In 2022, he was named Music Director of the Greenwich Symphony Orchestra in Connecticut, a role once held by David Gilbert, who also served as the Sinfonietta’s Artistic Director from 1986 to 1991.

The 2025 season features three distinct guest artists, each bringing a unique voice to the Sinfonietta’s summer series.

American soprano Robin Johannsen, known for her virtuosity, agility, and endurance and celebrated for her coloratura vocals and special affinity for the Baroque and Classical repertoires, will perform Ephiphanies, a song cycle by Jeremy Gill with the Sindonietta on July 27.

James Baik, a talented cellist and winner of the 2023 YCA Susan Wadsworth International Auditions has been praised for his expressive depth and lyrical warmth. He will appear by arrangement with Young Concert Artists, Inc. and will perform Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1 on August 9.

Daniel Gordon, acclaimed saxophonist, conductor, and educator brings decades of performance and research experience, including an immense study of Jacques Ibert’s Concierto da Camera, which he will perform this season on August 17.

The performances lined up are designed to inspire and engage audiences of all ages. The Symphony Series, held at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts, features six formal evening concerts showcasing the full orchestra in a traditional concert hall setting. The free Park Concerts at Mid’s Park in downtown Lake Placid invite families and visitors to enjoy chamber music lakeside. The Sinfonietta also reaches audiences throughout the region with runout and community concerts at venues including The Wild Center, Tannery Pond Center, Hotel Saranac, and a special children’s concert at St. Agnes School.

As part of its 2025 summer season, the Sinfonietta is also holding a fundraising raffle for a 12-foot sapphire blue ultralight Spitfire canoe, built by Placid Boatworks and weighing 18 pounds. Tickets are $20 each or three for $50. The drawing will take place during the final concert on August 17. Participants must be 18 years or older to enter, and the winner doesn’t need to be present to win, but must pick up the boat in Lake Placid. To enter, contact a board member or call the Sinfonietta office at 518-523-2051.

The Lake Placid Sinfonietta will also host its Midsummer Fundraising Gala on Friday, August 1 at the Adirondack Dining Room at the Whiteface Club & Resort. The evening includes cocktails, passed hors d’oeuvres, a buffet dinner, a silent auction, and live chamber music by String Soulstice Lite. The event will honor benefactors Dr. Claude Roland and Allola McGraw. All proceeds will support the Sinfonietta’s mission. Tickets include two drinks and entree options, and RSVPs are requested by July 15.
