In Focus: Phish Heats Up Pittsburgh with 42 Minute “

Phish played the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh on Tuesday, June 24. The first set was very solid with a few interesting song choices and a really nice jam in “Gumbo”. Page’s synth pop tune, “I Always Wanted It This Way,” is always welcome along with Trey’s buttery tone in “Ya Mar.”

The set would have been perfect in the summer sun but fans were more than happy to get a reprieve from the sweltering heat outside. The first set was a nice warm-up for the madness that was about to occur.

Set two started out with a great version of “You Enjoy Myself,” with Trey’s playing during incredible, feeling like he was back to his mid-90’s form. A reason for that might be his acquisition of an older Languedoc guitar an old friend of his from Burlington sold him, the “Koa 1.5.” His playing was smooth and fluid and the YEM really highlighted this. It was also topped off with an unusually melodic vocal jam that jammed back into the preceding funk jam.

Then it was time to get down to business, going into one of the better new songs that they have debuted in recent years, “What’s Going Through Your Mind.” The catchy tune had the room bopping and as Phish dropped into a 42-minute jam, the 6th longest in the band’s history, highlighting all the best parts of the band’s recent improvisational sound.

This jam had ambient sections, Trey sirens, happy sections, scary sections, and sections that sounded like they were trying to communicate with aliens, almost like a late night festival set, where time stood still and the whole room was locked in as they kept pushing and finding new interesting ideas and got extremely weird.

The rest of the second set was a sort of comedown from what had just happened, though the songs are a little more straight forward, the band was playing so well that these standards were elevated. “Prince Caspian” let the room breath and before a fiery “Julius,” before ending the set with a very nicely jammed “Blaze On.”

The encore started with the funk vehicle “The Howling” from their Halloween “Sci Fi Solider” set. I’ve seen this song several times but this was the first time I’ve heard them hit that funk groove that hard. It sounded like a thick Parliament Funkadelic jam, Page seemed to add some howling samples to go along with the crowd. A surprising call for “Ghost” to rap up the show was next. Even though it was shorter, it was a great blistering version, and the band then set everyone into the still hot, Pittsburgh night.
