An Interview with Ripe, Ahead of Tour Stop in Woodstock

In less than a week, Ripe will headline at Bearsville Theater in Woodstock. The show, set for April 17 and will be a night you won’t want to miss. NYS Music had a conversation with lead singer of Ripe Robbie Wulfsohn, as we approach their arrival to Woodstock.

Ripe bends genres but is commonly thought of as neo-soul – the six musicians all attended Berklee College of Music and bring an eclectic and energetic vibe to their live shows, as they strive to make music people can dance to. The band is currently on their “Ripe Live on Tour” which began in spring and will go into mid-summer; the tour includes headline shows and festivals.

Keira Mulder: Hello, we are so excited to hear from you today.

Robbie Wulfsohn: Hello! I am Robbie Wulfsohn and I am the lead vocalist of Ripe.

KM: What’s it like making music with your best friends? How does the dynamic of the group change outside of the band when making music together?

RW: It’s the best! We were all close before making music together but now were close in a way you can only find when making art together. Sometimes I look at those who don’t and wonder how they do it without their friends.

KM: Do you feel where you create your music has an impact on the final product? If your music was all made in a different place in the world, would it sound/feel different?

RW: I think place has an impact on our music but more importantly the time in our lives change it. Some of our music can transport us back into the time in our lives when we created it rather than the physical place.

KM: Who are your dream collaborators, venues, or artists to go on tour with?

RW: I’ll just answer this one for myself, I would love to open up for Dave Matthews Band. He’s been a formative artist for me and a few other guys in the band. The thing about some of our dream shows comes from curiosity I don’t know if they’ll (the audience) like me but I’m down to try. I grew up in Toronto so I’d love to play Massey Hall but I’m not sure it would make the most sense for us to play there.

KM: If you weren’t a musician what would your career be?

RW: I have no idea! We’ve just been doing this for so long I’m not sure I could change to do anything else.

KM: Do you guys have anything planned while you’re in New York? Anything special planned for the Woodstock show?

RW: Well, currently were on our way to our Virginia show so we’ve been planning what to see there. As for the show. We’ve been very actively trying to make each show special in some way.

KM: I guess we will have to wait and see what you have planned for us!

RW: You’ll see in one week!

KM: Thank you for talking with us today were so excited to see you guys in Woodstock!

RW: Thank you! We also can’t wait we’re having a great time on tour every show has been amazing so far!

Be sure to see Ripe on their headline tour in New York State: April 15 at Asbury Hall (Babeville) in Buffalo, April 17 at Bearsville in Woodstock, and April 18 at Middle Ages Brewing in Syracuse.
