Buena Vista Social Club: Broadway’s Must-See Musical Opens to Rave Reviews

The highly anticipated Broadway musical, Buena Vista Social Club, has officially opened to a wave of critical acclaim at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. The production, which tells the legendary story of the Cuban musicians behind the iconic album, captivated audiences and critics alike, earning rave reviews for its vibrant music, electrifying dance, and compelling storytelling.  

The opening night was a star-studded affair, with the cast celebrating on the red carpet before a truly special moment: a visit from the legendary Cuban singer, Omara Portuondo. Her presence brought tears to the eyes of the cast, particularly Natalie Venetia Belcon and Isa Antonetti, who portray her in the musical, as she joined them onstage and sang the classic bolero, “Veinte Años.”

The event drew a glittering array of VIP guests, including Eva Longoria, Wilmer Valderama, Lupita Nyong’o, John Leguizamo, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and many more, all eager to witness this theatrical celebration of Cuban musical heritage. Following the rapturous curtain call, where the original album’s creators, Juan De Marcos and Nick Gold, were acknowledged, attendees gathered for an afterparty at Pier 60.

Buena Vista Social Club™, with a book by Marco Ramirez and direction by Saheem Ali, brings the GRAMMY® Award-winning album to life through a powerful narrative and stunning performances. The production features a world-class Afro-Cuban band and a sensational cast, delivering a story of survival, second chances, and the transformative power of music. The choreography by Patricia Delgado and Tony Award winner Justin Peck further enhances the experience, creating a truly immersive and unforgettable theatrical journey.  

The cast, led by Natalie Venetia Belcon as Omara, Julio Monge as Compay, and Mel Semé as Ibrahim, delivers exceptional performances that resonate deeply with the audience. The band, under the musical direction of Marco Paguia, recreates the soul-stirring sounds of Cuba’s golden age, transporting viewers to the heart of Havana. The creative team, including scenic designer Arnulfo Maldonado, costume designer Dede Ayite, and lighting designer Tyler Micoleau, has meticulously crafted a visually and aurally stunning production.
