Over the years, Phil Lesh has celebrated countless birthdays and many unforgettable nights at the Capitol Theatre. This past weekend, he was once again honored by a rotating cast of incredible musicians, as the music of the Grateful Dead helped us find our way on the newly christened Phil Lesh Lane. Unbroken Chain: A Celebration of the Life and Music of Phil Lesh, on Monday, March 17, was a perfect end to the four night experience.

The night kicked off with a dreamy “Dark Star,” a song that’s woven its way in and out of sets since Friday when “Unbroken Chain” first set the tone. The first set unfolded with a series of deep jams, weaving through “Viola Lee Blues” and flowing into audience sing-alongs like “Bird Song,” which appeared at just the right moment.

The intro to “The Wheel” took us on a long and winding journey, and when the vocals finally arrived, the crowd was more than ready to sing along with the band. The set stretched on, and as set break arrived, the energy was palpable, with expectations high for what would come next.

The “St. Stephen” > “Good Times, Bad Times” mashup was something truly unreal. It also featured a jam that had strong Allman Brothers vibes, with Warren Haynes and Jimmy Herring exchanging smiles across the stage, clearly enjoying the magic they were creating. Over the course of these four nights, Phil’s celebration was brought to life by moments like these. The smiles we saw from Warren and Jimmy were reflected in the faces of every fan, a testament to the joy that filled the room.

A celebration, indeed — and, as always, we were home again.
