A street dedication took place and a ‘dead-icated’ fan base met up outside the Capitol Theatre on Friday, March 14th, as the town of Port Chester dedicated the Cross Streets at Broad St & Westchester Ave, to Phil Lesh.

Now known as Phil Lesh Lane, the crowd that gathered in front of the Capitol Theatre was in full force. The passing of Phil Lesh in late October of 2024 hit many people hard. This four-day weekend of shows at The Cap was sure to bring out many fans, as the community of Deadheads always brings the good vibes. As you approached the Capitol Theatre this afternoon, the music of the Grateful Dead could be heard, a mini “Shakedown Street” was up and running, and like always, the spirits of the fans waiting for the ceremony were sky high.

The Crowd gathered in front of the Capitol Theatre to hear some touching words by Gary Lambert, Peter Shapiro and Grahame Lesh. The Unbroken Chain players all stood behind the speakers, intently listening to stories of how special the Capitol Theatre was to Phil and the Dead community. The mayor of Port Chester was also in attendance to mark this special occasion.

The corner of Broad St. and Westchester Avenue is just a stones throw from the entrance of the Capitol Theatre, with the new sign, adorned with a tie-dye sheet, waiting to be unveiled as Phil Lesh Lane. Grahame Lesh’s son, Levon, did the honors by pulling the string to bring the new sign to the light of day.

The street then became overun with Phil Fans of all ages, local fireman from Port Chester, and all who came that day to celebrate the great Phil Lesh and the historic Capitol Theatre. The energy on the street was euphoric and nostalgic.
