In Focus: Maybird Jams at Bug Jar

Showcasing band stickers all over the walls and random household fixtures mounted above patrons, Bug Jar plays host to countless acts of all genres and never seems to not pack the house. The night of Saturday, January 25 was no different, as Josh Netsky and his band, Maybird made a stop at the infamous venue, playing for hometown fans.

After gaining a following in Rochester, Netsky and his brother Adam joined forces with local artists Overhand Sam (Sam Snyder) and Kurt Johnson. Subsequently were contacted by and signed with Danger Mouse in 2016. Leaning more towards a rootsy psychedelic vibe, the quartet has released six albums, including a couple EP’s.

Jamming to a crowd of around 150, Maybird played for a little over an hour, interweaving genres and tempos. With subtle solos from Adam Netsky on drums or Overhand Sam on guitar, there was never a dull moment as the diverse crowd left the bar side of the venue empty for most of the set.

Maybird is Josh Netsky on vocal, Adam Netsky on Drums, Sam Snyder on guitar. On this night, Sammy Hirsch (keys) and Shane McCarthy (bass), and Cian McCarthy (sax) joined the party.

Simple yet deep lyrics abound, each song will provoke various emotions and thought processes as the listener tries to find the true meaning of what is being sung. Take the “Turning Into Water” lyrics: “Turning into water, sinking when you pass me by, I’m turning into water, sinking when you pass me by

Local music at its best, played in your stereotypical dive bar, Maybird delivers an amazing sound that is often imitated but rarely duplicated. Factor in the environment of Bug Jar and small town feels, and a show like this is what makes local musicians and small businesses succeed way beyond the dollar.
